Clinical Rationale
Every Millimeter Matters
The therapeutic effectiveness of TMS depends on stimulating the correct cortical target with consistent position, orientation and contact throughout every session. Even small deviations can alter the induced electric field and contribute to variability in treatment delivery.
The limits of manual coil positioning
Targeting Sensitivity
Small errors may shift stimulation to unintended cortical regions.
Head Movement
Unavoidable during treatment; degrades coil-to-target alignment.
Operator Fatigue
Holding the coil in position for 20–40 minutes is physically demanding.
Coil Drift & Contact Pressure
Unintentional movement degrades stimulation accuracy over time.
Operator Variability
Manual positioning differs between clinicians and sessions.
Inconsistent Documentation
Manual records lack the precision needed for quality assurance.
The Platform
A Complete Navigation Ecosystem — Not Simply a Robotic Arm
Metis Orion integrates robotics, optical tracking, advanced navigation, workflow automation and treatment documentation into one clinical platform.
Navigation Software
Intelligent planning and guidance based on individual patient anatomy.
Optical Tracking
High-precision camera tracking of patient and coil throughout treatment.
Robotic Arm
Automated, sub-millimeter positioning of the TMS coil.
Patient & TMS Coil
Target interface and stimulation delivery.
Maintaining accuracy throughout treatment
Unlike static mechanical holders, Orion continuously tracks patient movement and automatically maintains the desired coil position and orientation for the entire session.
Automatic Movement Compensation
Real-time correction for involuntary head motion.
Stable Coil Orientation
Consistent angle and contact pressure maintained automatically.
Reduced Operator Workload
The clinician monitors treatment instead of manually holding the coil.
Workflow
From Planning to Treatment
Every step is guided, tracked, verified and documented — Plan, Navigate, Treat, Report.
01
Patient Registration
Register patient identity and link to the clinical record.
02
MRI Import (Optional)
Import the patient MRI for personalized anatomical targeting.
03
Target Definition
Define the cortical target using anatomical landmarks or coordinates.
04
Automatic Robot Positioning
The system moves the robotic arm to the defined target.
05
Real-Time Navigation & Treatment
Continuous optical tracking maintains accuracy during stimulation.
06
Automatic Session Report
Treatment parameters are documented and saved automatically.
Software Intelligence
A Live Operating Room for the Brain
Orion’s software turns a treatment session into a controlled, instrumented procedure — with real-time 3D visualization, continuous coil alignment feedback, contact-pressure monitoring and a full readiness review before a single pulse is delivered.
Real-time treatment visualization
During stimulation, the operator follows the whole procedure on one screen: a 3D brain model with the stimulation field, live coil alignment, coil-head contact pressure and session progress.
3D Stimulation Field
Color-coded mapping of the induced field over the patient anatomy.
Coil Alignment Monitor
Live RMS distance and Z-offset versus the planned target, with a crosshair alignment view.
Coil-Head Contact Pressure
Continuous graph of contact force in Newtons, with reference thresholds.
Session Progress
Pulses delivered vs. planned and elapsed vs. planned session time, at a glance.

Review readiness before stimulation
Before stimulation begins, Orion runs a complete readiness review. Required checks must pass; warnings are surfaced but allow the clinician to continue if acceptable. Position and angle errors are measured against explicit tolerances.
Required checks
Patient, Target, Protocol, Calibration, Robotic Arm, Camera Tracking, Safety Zone, Landing Object.
Warnings
Optional items flagged for clinician review (e.g. target scene still loading).
Targeting tolerance
Position error measured against a 3.0 mm limit; angle error against a 5.0° limit.
Live coil alignment
RMS distance and Z-offset tracked against the planned target in real time.
Position & angle tolerance
Position error limit 3.0 mm; angle error limit 5.0° — measured, not assumed.
Contact pressure monitoring
Coil-head contact force graphed continuously throughout the session.
Full readiness review
Eight-point checklist verified before every stimulation.
Multi-planar MRI views
Sagittal, coronal and axial views aligned to the target.
Automatic session report
Pulses, time, targeting and pressure data captured automatically.
